Ten Important Things to Look for When Buying an Used Car on Craigslist

Craigslist, one of the best-known sites for used car sales, offers a wide variety of vehicles. When buying a used car, you should consider several factors – helpful hints!

1. Exterior

The exterior is the first thing you should check on a Craigslist-used car. The panels shouldn’t have any dents or rust. Rust is a major problem, but small scratches do not cause as much concern. Also, the wheel wells and rocker panel must be examined. Open and close all the doors, trunks and roof.

2. Engine

When the engine is cool, it is best to inspect it. You will often notice dust or dirt. If there is oil on the floor or around the car there could be a problem. Also, check for loose wires and a corroded or faulty battery.

3. Tires and wheels

The tread on the tires should be uniformly worn out both sides of the vehicle. The vehicle may have been driven very hard if there is excessive wear on the outside. It is also important that the spare tire is in good shape.

4. Windshield

Check the windshield and windows for cracks and pitted areas. Even a small chip can be used to negotiate the price of the vehicle. Remember that any crack in your windshield will only get worse over time, resulting in an expensive repair.

5. Oil Filter and Dipstick

Check the oil level in addition to checking the fluids. The oil should be dark brown. The engine could be cracked if the oil or water on the dipstick looks foamy or gray. If you wipe down the rag, there should be no metal particles. This can indicate a serious problem.

6. Interior

If you smell a musty odor inside the Craigslist car, it could indicate a leak. The upholstery of the seat should be free from tears, and the rubber pedals should also be in good shape. Roofs should not be drooping and sunroofs should work properly.

7. Safety Features

You should check the safety features of a car, such as the turn signals and headlights, before purchasing it. Antilock brakes should be checked if the vehicle has them. The horn must work, and the muffler should be in good condition.

8. Electrical Components

Many vehicles are equipped with electronic components. The automatic door locks and windows should function properly. Stereo must also work properly. You should also test any other electrical features, such as a keyless entry or car alarm.

9. Manufacturer’s Emblem

The manufacturer’s logo is usually located on the door of the driver. No signs of tampering should be visible. The VIN should be easily readable, as should the date of manufacture.

10. Heater and Air Conditioning

You must warm up the engine before you can properly inspect the heater or air conditioner. The A/C should immediately start when you turn it on. Repairing a broken unit is expensive. Turn the fan to the highest speed setting and test the heat. If the air is damp, it could be an indicator that there is a leak in the heater core.
